A search for companions to nearby southern M dwarfs with near-infrared speckle interferometry
نویسندگان
چکیده
We searched the 9 M-dwarf primaries nearer than 5 pc and south of declination δ = −30◦ for companions with separations 1-10AU and found none. Taken togetherwith the 25 northern primaries studied by Henry and McCarthy (1990) the fraction of binaries and triples within the now complete sample of all M dwarfs within 5 pc is 9/34 = 26± 9%, and the average number of companions per system is 0.32± 0.10. This is lower by 2σ than the observed multiplicity fraction of 43 ± 5%, and companions per system of 0.49 ± 0.05 in the sample of nearby solar-type main sequence stars. It is also much lower than the extrapolated binary fraction among young stars in Taurus. We discuss the implications of this finding.

Revealing Companions to Nearby Stars with Astrometric Acceleration∗
A subset of 51 Hipparcos astrometric binaries among FG dwarfs within 67 pc has been surveyed with the Near-Infrared Coronagraphic Imager adaptive optics system at Gemini-S, directly resolving for the first time 17 subarcsecond companions and 7 wider ones. Using these data together with published speckle interferometry of 57 stars, we compare the statistics of resolved astrometric companions wit...
متن کاملDeep infrared imaging and spectroscopy of the nearby late M - dwarf
We obtained deep Hand K-band images of DENIS-P J104814−395606 using SofI and the speckle camera SHARP-I at the ESO-3.5m-NTT as well as QUIRC at the Mauna Kea 2.2m telescope between December 2000 and June 2001. The target was recently discovered as nearby M9-dwarf among DENIS sources (Delfosse et al. 2001). We detect parallactic motion on our images and determine the distance to be 4.6 ± 0.3 pc,...
متن کاملLow Luminosity Companions to White Dwarfs
This paper presents results of a near-infrared imaging survey for low mass stellar and substellar companions to white dwarfs. A wide field proper motion survey of 261 white dwarfs was capable of directly detecting companions at orbital separations between ∼ 100 and 5000 AU with masses as low as 0.05 M⊙, while a deep near field search of 86 white dwarfs was capable of directly detecting companio...
متن کاملSearch for low - mass PMS companions around X - ray selected late B stars
We have observed 49 X-ray detected bright late B-type dwarfs to search for close low-mass pre-main sequence (PMS) companions using the European Southern Observatory’s ADONIS (Adaptive Optics Near Infrared System) instrument. We announce the discovery of 21 new companions in 9 binaries, 5 triple, 4 quadruple system and 1 system consisting of five stars. The detected new companions have K magnitu...

Context. The Exozodi survey aims to determine the occurrence rate of bright exozodiacal discs around nearby main sequence stars using infrared interferometry. Although the Exozodi survey targets have been carefully selected to avoid the presence of binary stars, the results of this survey can still be biased by the presence of unidentified stellar companions. Aims. Using the PIONIER data set co...
